Shot In The Dark

Working a Con is an interesting experience- Everywhere you might look, something odd is going on, and yet being behind a table for most of the day, you really are mostly focused on people who come to you.

I was interviewed a couple of times, saw people dressed as everything from the "Iron Banana" you see above to three quarters naked girls wearing less than just pasties, was offered shots of vodka at 8 AM and met some of the coolest comic Pros that you could imagine... all without walking away from our table.

Being among the Con's working class, we were there every day before the booths opened and found ourselves getting to oogle the action figure displays with no one to bother us, and we got to chat with the other early risers as we set things up for the morning.

It's a very different thing from attending. I want to go to MoCCa, but I wonder if I'll feel out of place without the table...

then again, I'll be able to go to the bathroom when I please.

Escape From New York

Daniel and I spent the weekend manning a table at the NYC Comic Con. While I will be the first to tell you that it was a satisfying and productive weekend, it also was grueling at times. We missed sleep, ate irregular meals at odd intervals and spoke to more comic fans and pros than we could really have expected. For my part, I wound up being the social one- not having a full book to offer, it took alot more work to sell what little we did have. Because of that, I got into somewhat more lengthy discussions at times than I normally do, and it made the days breeze by.
Daniel, on the other hand, drew sketches until his hand was almost ready to pop off and run away like this... Most of the people who came for sketches wanted either one of our characters, or Hellboy or Batman. A couple of people wanted spiderman, and a few asked for obscure characters like members of Doom Patrol or Pinky & The Brain (I kid you not). One, and only one, asked for Daniel to draw themselves. The young man above asked for a portrait, and Daniel busted out something quite cool indeed. Oddly, we saw him and his friends again a couple of days later and a couple of blocks away from the convention center when we went to eat at Subway. Why our paths crossed again, God only knows, but it put an interesting bookend to an interesting weekend.
While he enjoyed doing sketches, I know he'll be happy to take a break from it and work on our projects.
While I enjoyed talking to everyone, I may become a little anti-social for a while, because dealing with 100,000+ people is exhausting.
More updates tomorrow- I need to catch up on my sleep.

Return Of The King

In a few days, Daniel and I will be at the New York Comic Con. From April 18th through the 20th, we will be manning an artist alley table and offering a bunch of cool stuff for sale. Aside from all the sketches Daniel will be doing, we will have a variety of KING! and Robot 13 prints, pins and artbooks. We are also hoping to have a special version of the original KING! book available as well a very cool KING! related raffle for Con attendies.

I'll announce more in the days to come, but in the meantime, enjoy one of the cool extras in the KING! special edition reprint...

Back To The Future

Daniel and I are scrambling a bit to get everything ready for the New York Comic Con in a few weeks; We are printing books, getting merchandise together and doing all the sundry things that need to be made ready to pull this thing off...

One of the coolest things that is going to happen, is there will be a special Robot 13 ashcan collection, complete with the first 8 pages of the first issue lettered in glorious black and white. I got the pages this morning, and they are stunning- maybe Daniel's best work to date. I may be biased, but this book is shaping up to be hotter than the sun...

Come by the show if you can and score one. You'll be happy you did.

Expect The Unexpected

I guess a person never does know what will happen from one day to the next... Tonight, I found out that Daniel will be making the trek to the East Coast for the New York Comicon, and that we will have a table in Artist Alley. It's going to be an awesome time- we'll have a whole table of goodies to sell, Daniel will be doing some special signings at another booth and the 2 of us should be talking business with a few interested parties.

As the days get closer, I'll fill you in on all the hooplah, but trust me when I say if you can make it to the Jacob Javits Center between April 18th and 2oth please do...
